Since Biden has been elected into office, he has come up with multiple ideas to change America. One of those ideas is changing the picture on the $20 bill from President Jackson to Harriet Tubman. How much work actually goes into changing the face on a bill? 

Well, the Congress has the power to change the portraits used on U.S. currency, this means that whenever someone chooses a new face to be on the bill congress has to approve for it to actually go through. The rules for someone to be on the bill is that they have to be dead and they have to be familiar faces in history. One of the most fought for occurrences of someone trying to change who was on the bill was in 2004 when Grover Norquist tried to boot Alexander Hamilton from the $10 and replace him with the conservative icon; Senator Mitch McConnell. Norquist told USA Today that “Hamilton was a nice guy and everything, but he wasn’t president”. The only complaint people might have about having a woman on the $20 bill is that everyone has their own reasons for changing it or keeping it the same so not everyone would agree with the idea. 

When the Treasury thinks about redesigning money, it isn’t about politics. The Treasury Department, along with the Federal Reserve, the Secret Service, and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing are always thinking about how to best stop people from counterfeiting it. That’s why dollar bills have slowly morphed over time, with stripes and nearly unnoticed images to make sure the money isn’t fake. “It’s important that our notes, our money, reflect the history and diversity of our country, and Harriet Tubman’s image gracing the new $20 note would certainly reflect that”, said by stone. They wanted to make sure that the candidates put on the $20 bill poll would fit into the Treasury’s budget. There are currently 15 female candidates on the poll for the new face of the $20 bill. Will we soon see Harriett Tubman on the $20? We shall see.
