Hi, I’m Emily, a participant of the CHatfield Outreach Program (CHOP), the club that brings people together and shows the importance of relationships with those in need. The club was taken over by the current leader Nkin Suwannakarn (Mr. Swanny) about 20 years ago. CHOP opens up many opportunities for the students at Chatfield to volunteer and give to those in need: Mr. Swanny says, “Being able to help others become better versions of themselves is the best gift.” Chatfield is currently partnered with Lumberg Elementary as chosen by Mr. Swanny as a result of making the best possible changes with the best impact. This club and program allows Chatfield to come together as a whole community including all clubs, sports, and staff not only to have an impact on the kids but to see the impact it makes on Chatfield and the students.
I joined CHOP knowing how much it brings me joy to see someone in need experience happiness from the smallest acts of kindness. Bringing the children joy made me eager to join, as we were told the kids see us as their “older siblings” and as role models. Giving back to the people who are less fortunate has made an impact on me as I see every person has their own story and coming together and simply building relationships makes the biggest change.
My favorite part of being a part of the program is first meeting the kids. The building of a relationship begins so fast and is a relationship that neither the kid nor you will forget. Seeing the kids crying as they load the bus to leave you shows how much a community around them prioritizes the little things to bring them joy.
Thank you to all who participated in the season of giving and giving to those in need. It is an amazing opportunity for Chatfield students to help others along with finding the best version of yourselves, while allowing everyone to feel like they belong.
