As the BLM organizations and the Gay Rights organizations have blown up recently a student at Chatfield has asked “What are we as a school and as a community doing for our gay and INPOC students who may feel unsafe or unwelcome in the school?” Here are responses from our counseling department

–This is complex issue which relies heavily on individual openness and community conversations.

–Queer community, including gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and asexual people. This can include, but is not limited to, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and asexual people.  Our GSA and Sources of Strength both support and intentionally honor this population by finding strengths and commonalities between all people.  We also honor our students that identify as transgender or non-binary by using their desired pronouns and names.

–Staff have been participating in trainings and conversations about elevating equity from district to individual levels.

–Jeffco schools is doing an entire curriculum equity and diversity audit.

–There is an amazing organization for students called Student Voice that any student can be a part of, and at Chatfield we just have a few students that have been active.  To participate, text @CSHVoice to 81010 (Ms. Rarich is the adult sponsor).  For more info, check out http://tinyurl.com/CSHVoice

–As a building, we will be conducting an equity audit in the spring, if you’re interested in this work, please contact Ms. Rarich, as we welcome student contributions, viewpoints and feedback.

–Thank you for your passion in this area, we are working on ‘decentering the white experience’ so that populations that are marginalized are represented in curriculum, activities and programs.

–Do you have any ideas?  Please set up an appointment to share them w/ Ms. Rarich http://calendly.com/rarich
