Heisman trophy winner Fernando Mendoza just did the unthinkable, leading his team to a 16-0 season and bringing home the Indiana Hoosiers first ever National Championship. He proved to the country that the SEC is not where all the biggest and best football players go anymore. Mendoza put up a magnificent run through the 2025 college football playoffs, defeating the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Quarterfinals 38-3, then rolling over the Oregon Ducks the following weekend 56-22, and to conclude the season, came out with the win against the Miami Hurricanes in the championship 27-21.

Early Life:
Fernando was born on October 1st, 2003, into a Cuban-American family. He grew up around a very religious and hard work-driven mentality. Mendoza began his career at Columbus Highschool In Miami, Florida. He grew up with his parents and brother, named Alberto Mendoza, who also happens to be a quarterback. In Highschool, Mendoza didn’t record very many stats during his freshman and sophomore season playing very few snaps of varsity football. Coming around to his Junior and senior seasons, he went 133 for 203 pass attempts, 16 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions, taking his team to the Florida state semifinals. After his breakout season, Mendoza was ranked as a 2-star recruit out of high school with a 4.7 gpa. He originally committed to Yale University before flipping his commitment to the University of California.

Beginning of his legacy:
Mendoza played a full two seasons at the University of California. As a freshmen he started 8 games, recording 1,708 all-purpose passing yards, 14 tds, and led his team to a bowl game later in the season. The following year Mendoza put his name on the watch board, throwing for over 3000 yards and 16 tds. He entered his name into the transfer portal shortly after the season and ended up transferring to Indiana. Mendoza started every game of his senior season at Indiana and made a difference for the Big Ten Conference. Starting off the season hot, Mendoza got into the talk about the Heisman trophy after being the only remaining undefeated team closing the regular season. Not including the playoffs, he completed 226 passes on 316 attempts, 33 touchdowns, and only 6 interceptions. The Hoosiers played in the Big Ten conference championship, coming into the game as underdogs against the Ohio State Buckeyes. They completed the upset 13-10 and proved that they aren’t just another fraud undefeated team with an easy schedule. Shortly after the conference championship, Mendoza was announced as the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner, which shocked everyone as he was picked over QB Diego Pavia, RB Jeremiah Love, and QB Julian Sayin, who all had incredible seasons.

The Final Show:
The 2025 college football playoffs is where this star quarterback made his statement to the world on who he is. Mendoza starts off the quarterfinals hot in the Rose bowl completing 14/16 passes, 192 passing yards, 3 tds, and 0 interceptions against Alabama, defeating them 38-3. The Hoosiers’ performance, led by their quarterback, had people automatically thinking that they’re going to win the National Championship no matter what it takes. The following week, Mendoza faced Oregon in the Semifinals and played his best game of the season. He completed 17/20 pass attempts, 172 yards, 5 tds, and 0 interceptions, advancing his team to their first-ever national championship appearance. This was it, time for Mendoza to shine and complete the undefeated season and take home that ring. Miami held the Hoosiers to very minimal points at halftime, giving them only a 10-point lead. Mendoza brought his team together and made sure they weren’t going to lose their only shot at making history. He went 16/27 on pass attempts, threw for 186 yards, and scored the game-winning rushing touchdown, breaking 4 tackles and taking a hard hit into the end zone for 6. The Indiana Hoosiers won the game 27-21 and, for the first time ever, were proud to say they were #1. Mendoza declared for the NFL Draft after the season and now will prepare for the combine. This is not just the end for the young, growing star, but only the beginning of his potential for what’s to come.
