What Does it Mean to be a Unified Mentor?

Unified Mentoring at Chatfield might mean a variety of things, but it is above all rewarding and fulfilling. Knowing that you’ve made a significant difference in kids’ lives is what the program is all about. I have worked with these students long enough to learn that it’s a pleasant sight to witness a unified student learn something new and feel so rejoiced from it. There is no doubt in my mind that these are one of the happiest students on the planet and they never fail to put a smile on my face. Some lessons that can be taught in a unified class are not anything you can learn from a regular classroom. Lessons of self-esteem, patience, and the ability to wear multiple hats with any student’s behaviors. Working with these students is fulfilling, although it comes with a lot of responsibility. That being stated, it is critical to attend class. The kids expect you to be there, and it can be very upsetting for them if you are not.

Programs at the School

Coffee Shop: Every Tuesday and Thursday our unified kids make drinks and breakfast foods with the help of our mentors and teachers around the school. Teaching them skills to prepare food and deliver it to teachers is so important and a great way to get them involved in the school.

Recycling: Near the end of the school day our unified students come around and collect recycling from our teachers. This teaches the students skills of hard work and responsibility.

Sports Programs: Bowling, Basketball, Soccer

Anyone is Welcome!

Ms. Shelly

Our lovely Ms. Shelly says that these kids are the

“Most genuine and honest kids you will ever meet.”

On days she feels down, she finds that coming to school and seeing her students brightens her day. Something that everyone should appreciate about Ms. Shelly is her ability to always have a smile on her face inside or outside of work. She has a strong ability to communicate with her students and teach them to grow into wonderful strong individuals. All in all, she says that these kids love your support and love when you show up for their events. Ms. Shelly is forever grateful for the awesome kids she gets to work with every day.
